Is the first increase in the carbon level in the atmosphere in 3 lakh years?

New York, June 7, 2021, Friday

According to the data recorded by the Mauna Loa Observatory on April 6, 2021, for the first time in human history, the level of carbon dioxide reached 7.81 ppm. This is the first increase in carbon dioxide in 3 million years. Earlier, according to figures released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels reached 316.5 ppm in May 2020. This was the period when the economic downturn reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 7%.

According to the latest figures, the amount of carbon in the atmosphere has increased by 40 per cent since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The Hawaii-based Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii has been tracking carbon dioxide levels in the Earth's atmosphere since the 120's. According to him, the average annual carbon dioxide level in the 19th century was 216.5. It is to be mentioned that in 2016, it increased from 7.5 to 206.5. In 2012, for the first time, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere exceeded 200 ppm.

If you look at the average, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased by 1.2 ppm every year from 19 to 2016. According to figures released by the Skips Institution of Oceanography, the level of carbon dioxide in May 2020 reached 314.1 ppm. In which the annual average of 2030 was 216.5 ppm. Carbon dioxide is an important heat mapping greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere through deforestation, fossil fuels, volcanic eruptions and emissions.

India is the world's third largest carbon emitter. Rising global levels of carbon dioxide are also a matter of concern for India. However, no direct study has been done on the impact of carbon dioxide on India. A study by the Center for Science and Environment shows that since the beginning of the 20th century, the average annual temperature in India has risen by 1.5 per cent. As a result of which a situation like heavy rains and drought is being created and not only the agricultural economy is also being severely damaged.
