The financial year 2020-21 saw a sharp decline in railway platform ticket revenue due to the restrictions imposed by Corona. According to the Railways, in response to a query under RTI, platform ticket revenue has increased by 3 per cent this year as compared to last year due to restrictions on entry to the station due to coronavirus crisis.

In the year 2016-70, the railways had earned Rs 130.5 crore from platform ticket revenue. Which was the highest in five years. In the financial year 2020-21, till February, the revenue from railway platform tickets was only Rs 10 crore.

Even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown in March 2020, people other than passengers were barred from entering the railway station to avoid congestion.

The power to fix railway platform ticket rates and who to admit or not was delegated to the Divisional Railway Managers. As a result, in some stations, no one was allowed to enter except the passengers.

To limit the number of people at railway stations, the railway platform ticket rate was increased from Rs 10 to Rs 50. However, in some zones, the ticket price was increased to Rs 50.
