The last few days in Singapore have been marked by racial discrimination against people of Indian descent. People of Chinese descent in particular are targeting Indians.
Some have been making racial slurs, blaming people of Indian descent for the double mutation of the corona virus that has spread in Singapore. Indians are not allowed to take taxi drivers, the slogans of Indian go back are written on the bus stand. In public transport, people of Indian descent do not sit in the same seat as others.
Now there is racial violence against Indians. People of Indian descent are being blamed for the virus. Most of the perpetrators are Chinese nationals. According to media reports, a teacher named Nita of Indian origin went for a walk in a nearby stadium. At that moment his mask was going down his nose and seeing this a man of Chinese origin got angry and started shouting loudly.
Nita, meanwhile, said that the mask does not have to be on the nose while exercising. Hearing this, the man of Chinese descent kicked her and she fell to the ground. Nita's family then lodged a complaint with the police.
Ethnic attacks and comments on Indians have started from social media. The post was placed on a Twitter account. It was said that the reason for the spread of Corona in Singapore was Hindustanis and other foreigners. Who are not natives of Singapore. Police have also taken action against the poster.
In another incident, an Indian family was returning to Singapore on May 11 when a 30-year-old Chinese man approached them and started making racist remarks. He was constantly blaming this family for the core. He told the Indian family, "Keep going back to your country. You are spreading the virus here." However the incident was captured on camera and the police arrested the Chinese youth.
Such incidents have reverberated in the Singapore Parliament as well. "There is a small class that is sowing the seeds of racial discrimination against Indians," said Singapore's home minister. As PM Lee said, I am also concerned about such incidents.
Strict anti-apartheid laws have been enacted in Singapore since 1960 and such incidents have been rare since then. There are currently about 100 cases of corona in Singapore. Only 43 people were infected with corona a week ago. Corona's double mutant has been blamed for a growing number of cases in Singapore. The quarantine period for people coming from India to Singapore has been extended to 21 days.
