Impact of Yas: 5 killed in lightning and heavy rains in West Bengal

At least five people were killed in separate lightning strikes in West Bengal on Thursday. This information was given by an official of the Disaster Management Department. He said that two teenagers died due to lightning at Hariharpada in Murshidabad district and one person died at Nakashipada in Nadia district.

Apart from that, 2 boys died at Nandigram in East Medinipur after being struck by lightning. A day after Hurricane Yas in the state, heavy rains lashed many cities and districts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal and Odisha today (Friday) to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Yas.

Affected 1 crore people in Bengal

The Bengal government claims that at least 10 million people have been affected and 3 lakh houses have been damaged. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the state was most affected by the hurricane. Almost the whole of West Bengal has been flooded and many dams have collapsed. Areas like Sagar and Gosaba in South 24 Parganas and coastal areas like Mandarmani, Digha and Shankarpur in East Midnapore are flooded. There has been very extensive damage in low-lying areas. Mamata Banerjee claimed a loss of about Rs 15,000 crore in the state.
