Hurricane 'Yas' to reach Bengal-Odisha coast on May 26 evening, 65 NDRF teams deployed


- Winds of 155 to 165 kmph, heavy rains and thunderstorms expected in coastal districts

Cyclone Yas, which has formed in the Bay of Bengal, is likely to hit the coasts of West Bengal and North Odisha by the evening of May 26. The National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) is preparing to deploy 65 teams in areas affected by the storm. Another 20 NDRF teams will also be ready to be deployed if required.

A meeting of the National Disaster Management Committee (NCMC) was held to review hurricane preparedness. The meeting was chaired by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gaba. The meeting reviewed the readiness of the Central, State and Union Territory governments and agencies to tackle Yas. The DGA of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) briefed the committee on the latest hurricane conditions.

According to the IMD, the storm is likely to reach the coast of West Bengal and adjoining northern Odisha by the evening of May 26. Meanwhile, winds of 155 to 165 kmph are expected, with heavy rains and thunderstorms expected in the coastal districts of the states. The Chief Secretary of the concerned states briefed the committee on the preparations made to deal with the hurricane and also said that work was underway to evacuate people from the low-lying areas.

According to the Chief Secretary of State, adequate stocks have been arranged for the supply of food, drinking water and other necessities. At the same time, necessary preparations have been made to maintain the essential services like electricity and telecommunication. In addition to ships and aircraft, rescue teams from the Army, Navy and Coast Guard have also been deployed.

Necessary preparation for Covid Care Center

Necessary arrangements are also being made to ensure proper operation of hospitals and covid care centers. Oxygen production and supply is also being ensured for Covid Care Centers across the country.
