Even if the BJP comes to power in Assam, there is no consensus on the name of the Chief Minister

Guwahati, Dt. 4 May 2021, Tuesday

The BJP has made history by returning to power for the second time in Assam. However, now the BJP is facing a big challenge over who should be made the Chief Minister of Assam.

This time in the election campaign, the BJP did not field the incumbent Chief Minister Sarvanand Sonewal and fielded the state's gigantic leader and minister Hemant Biswa Sarma.

During the election he campaigned stormyly. Now the biggest challenge facing the party is who should be given the helm of the state. The party is yet to agree on the name of the Chief Minister. Some leaders still want to see Sonewal as the CM but Hemant Biswa Sarmanu's name has reached the Center leadership.

However, the BJP has already said that the central leadership will decide on the new chief minister once the results come out. Hemant Sarma's claim is strong this time. Given his size in other states in the North East, the party may find it difficult to ignore him.

Hemant Sarma left the Congress before the 2016 elections and joined the BJP. Even then he was a contender for the CM but the BJP made Sarvanand Sonewal the CM. However, in the last five years, he has played a major role in strengthening the BJP in the Northeast.

This time the BJP has regained power here, while the Congress alliance has been defeated again.
