Black fungus cases continue to rise, 8,848 people wrapped, 23,680 injections allotted

In the midst of coronary heart disease, the number of cases of mucorrhoea, i.e. black fungus, is increasing very fast in the country. So far, 8,848 cases of black fungus have been reported from different parts of the country and more than 200 people have died. In the midst of all this, several states have declared the black fungus an epidemic. The demand for amphotericin-B, an antifungal drug used to treat black fungus, is also on the rise.

Meanwhile, a total of 23,680 additional doses of amphotericin-B were allotted to all the states and union territories on Saturday. Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister DV Sadananda Gowda gave this information. Earlier on Thursday, the Delhi High Court had directed the Center to procure the drug internationally to meet the growing demand in the country.

10 most affected states

In Maharashtra, more than 1,500 cases of mucomycosis have been reported and 90 people have died due to it. In Gujarat, 1,163 cases have been registered and 61 people have died. Apart from that, several cases have been reported in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Telangana.

What is Black Fungus?

Black fungus is a rare infection also called mucormycosis. It is proving to be dangerous in Covid-19 patients or those who have recovered from it. 50 to 80 percent of patients die if not treated in time. This is a type of fungal infection that happens especially to people who are on medication because of an illness. Such people have reduced ability to fight off germs. In such people the infection is transmitted to the sinuses or lungs by air.
