The world's largest nuclear power plant will be set up in India, providing electricity to 70 million households

New Delhi, April 30, 2021

Together with France, India has taken steps to set up the world's largest nuclear power plant.

"We have offered to purchase equipment for engineering studies as well as equipment for the construction of six third-generation reactors. These reactors will be set up at Jaitpur in Maharashtra. However, it will take another 15 years to build. However, power generation will start before the construction work is completed on the site.

The EDF company will not build a power plant but will supply a nuclear reactor. The reactor deal also involves US company GE. The EDF has sent an offer to India's public sector company, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. Details have not been released but the figure is speculated to be Rs 2 trillion.

The Jaitapur plant was originally protested by locals in the past. The idea for the plant was 20 years old but the Jaitapur project was halted after the 2011 tsunami devastated Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant.

The French company EDF believes that the geographical location of Jaitapur is ideal for a nuclear power plant.

There are currently 22 nuclear reactors operating in the country, accounting for about three per cent of the country's total electricity generation.
