Terrorists trying to flee the mosque in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district on Friday also tried to set fire to a part of the mosque.

Security forces conducted an operation yesterday to flush out the terrorists hiding here. Officials said there was a tense atmosphere around the mosque due to the operation. The terrorists were hiding inside and the security forces wanted to get them out.

Locals gathered outside the mosque. The militants wanted to surrender. Hours passed in a tense atmosphere. The families of the militants were also sent inside. The militants were given 17 chances to surrender. The terrorists finally carried out an operation on Friday afternoon and killed the terrorists.

Officials said care was taken to minimize damage to the mosque during the operation. He also said a clear message should be conveyed to the terrorists that taking up arms against the country was not an option.

After the operation, the jawans cleaned the mosque and religious books were handed over to the locals.
