New Delhi, 23 April 2021 Friday

The second wave of corona could cause a lockdown or partial lockdown in many states, costing the country about Rs 1.5 lakh crore, of which about 80 per cent would be in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, SBI Research claimed in a report. According to SBI Research, Maharashtra alone could account for 54 per cent of the damage caused by the current lockdown in various states.

"At present, we estimate that the loss in Maharashtra alone will be around Rs 82,000 crore. If the lockdown is tightened, the damage could definitely increase," the SBI Research report said. On the other hand, Madhya Pradesh could lose about Rs 21,712 crore and Rajasthan about Rs 17,237 crore.

Significantly, lockdown or partial lockdown has been imposed for some days in some areas of Maharashtra and NCR in view of the reported cases of corona. Maharashtra has lockdown and night curfew on weekends. Similarly, in many cities in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, various types of restrictions have been put in place. Lockdown has been imposed in 15 districts of Madhya Pradesh. A lockdown has been imposed in Rajasthan till May 3.

SBI Research has slashed the country's GDP growth estimate to 10.4 per cent in FY2021-22 due to the lockdown in the second wave of Covid 19. He had earlier projected a growth rate of 11 per cent.
