Chabahar port to start in May, India to be able to trade with Afghanistan without leaving Pakistan

- Trump administration exempts India's plan to rebuild Afghanistan from its tough sanctions on Iran

India has stepped up work on the Chabahar port in Iran since the beginning of this year after a brief hiatus. The operation of this strategically important port will also be started from next May. This information was given in a report presented in the US Congress. In 2015, India agreed to help expand the Chabahar port and railway line in Iran. This will help India to do baroque trade with Afghanistan without going through Pakistan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Iran in 2016 and signed an agreement to invest 50 500 million to develop port-related infrastructure. The Trump administration had exempted India's 'Afghanistan Reconstruction' plan from its tough sanctions on Iran, but India halted work on the project in late 2020.

The work was revived in early 2021 and is expected to begin operations by May 2021. This report has been prepared by experts and is not an official report of the US Congress.
