100 crore recovery wrist: Supreme Court tweaks Uddhav government, rejects plea to stay CBI probe

New delhi date. Thursday, April 8, 2021

Maharashtra's politics is currently undergoing a major upheaval. Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has resigned after the Rs 100 crore recovery scandal and the matter is being investigated by the NIA. Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and the Uddhav government have suffered another setback. The Maharashtra government and Anil Deshmukh had filed an application in the Supreme Court challenging the Maharashtra High Court's verdict, which was rejected by the apex court.

A few days back, the Bombay High Court had ordered a CBI probe into allegations of corruption against Anil Deshmukh. Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh had alleged extortion of Rs 100 crore.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hemant Gupta in the Supreme Court rejected the plea to stay the CBI probe. The Maharashtra government had said that the High Court could not order an inquiry against the former home minister without giving him a chance. The apex court said there was a need for an independent inquiry into the seriousness of the allegations and the people involved. This is a matter of faith of the people. So that we do not interfere with any command.
