Controversial statements are also being made amid the ongoing election campaign for the West Bengal Assembly elections. In one such case, TMC leader Sheikh Alam has caused a stir by issuing a separatist statement.

Sheikh Alam said, "We are 30 per cent minority and they are 70 per cent. If we have 30 per cent people all over India, we can create not one but four Pakistan. Then we will see where these 70 per cent will go."

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya has leaked the statement on social media, saying, "Mamata Banerjee supports the statement made by Sheikh Alam in the election rally. Do we need a Bengal called Sheikh Alam?"

It may be recalled that even during the last assembly elections, TMC leader and minister in the Mamata government, Firhad Hakeem, described the Garden Reach area of Calcutta as a mini-Pakistan, in an interview with a Pakistani journalist. This was followed by a huge uproar. The Pakistani newspaper then included the statement in its online edition.
