Half of all child brides in the world are from 5 countries, including India. It also has 1 out of every 3 Indians. The report was released by UNICEF on International Women's Day.

Covid-19 has become a major obstacle in the ongoing campaign against child marriage and the number of child brides could increase by 10 million by the end of the century.

According to one report, there are about 650 million women who were married off in infancy. Half of them are from Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India and Nigeria. Urgent efforts are needed to bring the girls and their families out of the situation that the epidemic has caused in the last one year.

The situation needs to be improved through social, economic and health services, according to Henrietta Four, UNICEF's executive director. Apart from that proper observance of laws will also play a big role.

According to UNICEF, the 25 million child marriages that have been prevented in the last decade have major challenges ahead. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), there was a big difference in the number of child brides in 1992-93, falling from 54% to 27%. It has been steadily declining over the last decade.
