Tamil Nadu and Kerala govt's reply in SC on 50% reservation, says election is on

New delhi date. 15 March 2021, Monday

A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Monday began hearing the Maratha reservation issue. An appeal has been made to the court by the Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments to avoid hearing the matter.

The governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu say the hearing should be avoided because of the election, as it would be a decision attached to the policy. The government cannot take any party in this at present.

However, the apex court said the government had a week to respond. Governments prepare their own written response and give it to the court. At present, the only focus is on whether Indra Sah's judgment needs to be reconsidered.

Earlier, the apex court had asked all the states to increase the reserve limit by 50%. The court sought the opinion of each state as the impact of this decision could be far-reaching.
