A Pakistani girl has demanded a book worth Rs 1 lakh from her husband under the Maher Haq rule. The girl's name is Nayla Shumal Safi, a resident of Mardan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Nayla herself is a writer and her export has been with a writer Dr. Sajjad Jondu. He has asked for a book of gold, silver or gifts at the time of marriage. He has made a video message between the red shoes of the wedding and in it he says why he asked for the book. In the video, he gives a clear message to end the evil practice going on in Pakistan.

In an interview with the BBC, Dr Sajjad Jondu said that when he heard about his fianc's Haq Maher, he was happy that it would put an end to the practice of asking for a large sum of money. According to Sajjad Jundoon, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, girls demand Rs 10 to 20 lakh as dowry from boys and many in dowry.

What is 'Maher' given at the time of marriage?
According to Muslim law, maher is a type of property, which is the amount or property given to the wife by the husband at the time of marriage. The law places the responsibility of respecting the wife on the husband. Maher belongs to the wife only, not to her parents or husband. If the husband is a minor, the responsibility of Maher rests with the husband's parents.

Who decides the dowry given in marriage?
The mehr is determined by the independence of both the parties, usually the circumstances of both the parties and their social status, clan, descent or reputation, the wife's educational qualifications and her achievements, the husband's financial status, the parties' self-satisfaction, conduct and customs. Muslim law also states that mahr can be used as a tool to control the husband so that he does not divorce his wife.
