Bengal-Assam second phase campaign to be halted today, Mamata Banerjee's fight in Nandigram

Calcutta, Ta. Tuesday 30 March 2021

The campaign for the second phase of the West Bengal and Assam Assembly elections will be halted on Tuesday evening. The second phase of polling in both the states is scheduled for Thursday. In Bengal, 171 candidates are vying for 30 assembly seats while in Assam, 345 candidates are in the fray for 39 seats. While the TMC's credibility is at stake in Bengal, it is a challenge to defend its reputation against the BJP in Assam.

In the second phase, TMC's credit is at stake

The second phase of the West Bengal elections saw a total of 30 assembly seats in four districts go to polls on April 1. Nine seats are in East Medinipur district, eight in Bankura, nine in West Medinipur and four in South 24 Parganas. The TMC swept the area in the last election but this time the equation has changed a lot. The BJP has high hopes from this area. The vote of the Matua community is being considered very important at the second phase meeting.

Fight between Mamata Banerjee and Shubhendu Adhikari in Nandigram

The second phase also includes the Nandigram constituency, which is considered to be the most high profile seat in Bengal, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Shubhendu Adhikari from the BJP are facing each other.

Mamata Banerjee does not want to leave any stone unturned to win the Nandigram seat. So they have been holding hasty election rallies and road shows in Nandigram since Sunday. Mamata Banerjee said, "I will stay in Nandigram till the polls on April 1 and leave after the polls." This makes it clear that Mamata Banerjee does not want to take any risky step at the Nandigram seat.

On the other hand, on the last day of the campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also going to hold a rally and road show in Nandigram in support of BJP candidate Shubhendu Adhikari on Tuesday. Apart from this, veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, who recently joined the BJP, will also conduct a road show in Nandigram to create an atmosphere.
