People who travel by rail can find the habit of smoking overwhelming. In fact, the Indian Railways is preparing to take action against those who smoke while traveling in a train or on the railway premises.

Under a plan drawn up by the railways to curb fire incidents, anyone caught smoking in a train could be sent to jail. Also, fines can be levied.

According to the Railway Act, it is an offense to smoke in a train, but at present there is a penalty of only Rs 100. Smoking cannot be controlled because the amount of the fine is so negligible. Now the government is planning to take drastic action, including jail terms, in addition to increasing the amount of fines.

Recently, fires broke out in Dehradun Shatabdi Express and Lucknow Shatabdi Express. A post-fire investigation report on the Dehradun Shatabdi Express revealed that the coach caught fire after the passenger threw a cigarette in the bathroom and threw it in the dustbin.
