Media reports claimed that a number of high-ranking central government officials had been targeted by hackers. The National Information Center immediately instructed government offices to remain alert. According to reports, mails were sent to high-ranking officials, especially Defense Department officials, using government-issued mail IDs. Mail was sent to Department of Defense officials from IDs such as Domain Government.in and NIC.in used in government offices.
A folder was attached to the mail. Was asked to click on it. Clicking on it can instantly leak data from that device. The NFC issued an alert regarding the phishing attack.
Sensitive information was not leaked from the computers that were targeted, according to reports citing officials. It was not immediately clear how many computers and how many officers were targeted and who was responsible for the cyber attack. There have been similar phishing attacks in the past targeting high-ranking Indian officials. According to experts, there is a special need for government offices to adopt a more secure authentic protocol system to prevent such attacks.
