Phishing Attack is being carried out by the government mail, targeting the officials of the Ministry of Defense


- NIC alerted various branches involved in possible security breaches

Several senior government officials from the Ministries of Defense and External Affairs are being targeted by phishing attacks using government-owned email accounts. The attackers carried out such a cyber attack earlier this month and sent emails to several officials.

Experts point out the need for better and authentic protocols in view of the ongoing cyber attacks. The National Information Science Center (NIC) issued an alert shortly after the attack. However it is not yet clear whether sensitive information has been stolen from any of the targeted computers.

Mail was sent on 10 February

Officials from various ministries, including defense, were reportedly mailed on February 10 asking them to click on the attached document. The NIC then alerted the various branches involved in possible security breaches and also notified all the officials of the targeted ministries.

A phishing attack is a type of cybercrime in which personal data is stolen using email and websites opened on the Internet. Personal information of a person is also collected with the help of this data. Fishers steal a person's personal information and empty their bank account.
