Interference must be made for people's privacy: Supreme Court on WhatsApp's new policy

New delhi date. 15 February 2021, Monday

The controversy over WhatsApp's new policy is gaining momentum. The Supreme Court on Monday will have to intervene to protect people’s privacy in light of the new policy of social media company Facebook and WhatsApp.

"Loro has serious fears that he will lose his privacy and it is our duty to protect him," the apex court said. "People value their privacy more than the company," the court told WhatsApp.

The court told Facebook and WhatsApp, "You may be a company of 2 or 3 trillion but people value their privacy more than that and have a right to believe so." Separate criteria are being adopted for Europe and India, the petition said. Data protection law is about to be enacted in India. WhatsApp has come up with a new policy without waiting for it.

The case is linked to WhatsApp's privacy policy, which came to light in 2016. Hearing the case, the court asked the government whether it would enact any law to protect the personal data of citizens and prevent its misuse. The government has to respond to this issue.
