Religious flag at Red Fort: Petition filed in Supreme Court, take note of Delhi violence and take action

- The national flag on the Red Fort should be changed

New Delhi 27th January 2021 Wednesday

An application was filed in the Supreme Court this morning against the violence on the pretext of holding a tractor rally in the capital New Delhi on Republic Day and the hoisting of a religious flag at the Red Fort.

The petitioner requested the court to take suo moto (self) note on the violence in Delhi and hoisted another national flag at the Red Fort.

In his petition, Vishal Tiwari, a legislator, also requested the apex court to have the violence in New Delhi investigated by a retired Supreme Court judge and the perpetrators punished. Earlier, a law student had written a letter to the country's Chief Justice SA Bobde requesting him to take note of the religious flag hoisted on the Red Fort and file a case.

In a letter to the Chief Justice, the student, Ashish Rai, said that the whole country was stunned by the incident of hoisting the religious flag of a particular society instead of the national flag at the Red Fort. The incident not only insulted the national flag but also the constitution of the country. The Supreme Court should take serious note of this incident and take necessary legal action.

Today's meeting of the four-member committee formed by the Supreme Court on the new agricultural law was also canceled in view of Tuesday's violence. In the case of hoisting the religious flag at the Red Fort, the names of Deep Sidhu, a one-time close associate and actor of BJP Gurdaspur (Punjab) MP Sunny Deol and gangster Lakha Sidhana were mentioned. Congress MP Bittu alleged that the Indian national flag was insulted by Khalistani militants and that a meeting was held three days ago in which he planned to resort to violence on Republic Day.
