Security forces have continued to crack down on militants in the Kashmir Valley, making it the lowest number of militants active in the Kashmir Valley in the last one decade.

"Currently, we estimate that 217 militants are active in the valley," said Lt. Gen. BS Raju, a senior Indian Army officer. The conspiracy to send weapons to Pakistan through drones and mines has created a new challenge but the Army is now using sophisticated technology to locate the mines to meet it.

He said that one in 20 to 25 search operations is when the security forces come in contact with terrorists and care is taken to minimize the inconvenience to the locals during such search operations. Soldiers are being specially trained to respect local culture.

According to BS Raju, when we find out that the terrorists are trapped in a certain place, if the terrorists are local, the army first gives them the option to surrender and if possible appealed by their family. The Encounter option is adopted only after all attempts have failed. Terrorists are using social media to spread rumors and recruit new recruits but this time they have succeeded in reducing terrorist infiltration by 70 per cent as compared to last year.
