6.2 magnitude earthquake shakes Indonesia


-More than 100 people suffered minor injuries

-Strong shocks hit the island of Sulawesi

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday morning, January 15. At least seven people were killed and more than 100 were injured, according to initial reports.

A spokesman for Indonesia Disaster Management said the epicenter was 10 kilometers below the ground. Its magnitude was 6.2 on the Richter scale. However, no tsunami alert was issued and no tsunami alert was issued.

The epicenter was reported six kilometers northeast of the city. The tremors were felt for about seven seconds. A number of houses collapsed. People panicked and fled. Earlier on Thursday, tremors were also felt in some parts of the country.

The previous major earthquakes were in 2002 and 2018. The quake, which measured 9.1 on the Richter scale in 2004, killed at least 2.5 million people. The shock of 2018 also hit the Sulawesi Island area. The quake, which measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, killed at least 4,300 people.
