The Ministry of Defense has formally rejected a plan to save the Navy's aircraft carrier Virat from crashing. Shipbreakers in Gujarat are preparing to demolish it and turn it into scrap. Virat was at one time the main battlefield of the Indian Navy.

The ministry has claimed that Alang-based shipbreaker company Shri Ram Group of Industries, which bought it after the end of naval service, was not in favor of the proposal. Shri Ram Group of Industries has clarified its position by appearing before the High Court. The group has said it is not ready to join any proposal other than a plan to scrap the ship and turn it into a wreck. Mukesh Patel said in his statement that he wanted to sell the warship to the biggest bidder.
