Movement is a right of farmers, it cannot be stopped: Supreme Court

New delhi date. 17 December 2020, Thursday

A hearing was held in the Supreme Court today to remove farmers protesting on the Delhi border against the central government's agricultural laws. However, the court made it clear that the farmers have the right to protest and the court will not stop them for this. The agitation is justified as nothing has been done so far in the farmers' demonstrations. Therefore the type of movement should be changed.

Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobade said that if the Attorney General assured that the agricultural laws would not be implemented now and no other temporary action would be taken, the Supreme Court would proceed to form a committee.

In response, the Attorney General said, "I will talk to the government and report it to the Supreme Court."

The apex court had directed the government during the hearing to suspend the implementation of the new law for a while so that dialogue with farmers would be possible. The court, meanwhile, said that agitation is a fundamental right of farmers but it needs to be balanced in such a way that the rights of others remain the same.

It was argued before the court that people go from UP to Haryana for jobs and they have been harassed for the last several days due to the agitation. The court said that this is true but farmers also have the right to protest. .
