Addis Ababa / Ethiopia, 24 December 2020, Thursday

More than 100 people have been killed in a deadly gun attack in Ethiopia. The bomber struck shortly after noon in the village of Bekoji in Bullen County. People in the area, which has been plagued by sexual violence, are fleeing their homes. Africa is the second most populous country. Violence has continued since Prime Minister Abiya Ahmed came to power in 2018.

Prime Minister Ahmed has made democratic reforms that have eased his grip on regional rival groups. Ethiopia is set to hold elections next year and tensions are rising over land, power and natural resources. On the other hand, in another part of the country, the Ethiopian army is fighting the rebels. Clashes between the Ethiopian army and the opposition have been going on for six weeks.

Clashes between the army and rebels have displaced 950,000 people. On the other hand, after the deployment of troops to crush the rebels, there are now fears that security in other troubled areas could be compromised. Ethiopia is facing extremism in the Oromia region and they have long faced the threat of Somali Islamic militants on the eastern border.
