- Pakistan pleads with Britain: We are guilty

Islamabad Saturday 19th December 2020

There were reports that Pakistan had initiated the extradition ceremony of Nawaz with the British government to take legal action against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Nawaz Sharif was accused of embezzling billions of rupees from Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif did not return after going to Britain for kidney treatment. Pakistan alleged that Nawaz Sharif fled under the pretext of medical treatment.

Pakistan's Supreme Court declared Nawaz Sharif a fugitive and began talks with the British government to send him back to Pakistan. Earlier this month, a top Pakistani court declared Nawaz a fugitive.

Nawaz Sharif quoted the doctors treating him as saying that he could not appear in court in person as his treatment was not yet complete. However the court did not accept that argument.

Supporters of Nawaz Sharif say the intentions of the Pakistani military and the current government are not good. They want to punish Nawaz Sharif at any cost by punishing him severely. There seemed to be a dialogue between the two sides.

Pakistan's Information Minister Shibli Faraz told reporters that it was the moral duty of British government officials to send back a convicted criminal like Nawaz Sharif. Our efforts to bring Sharif back were ongoing. We were negotiating with the British government.
