Volcanic eruption in Indonesia: Evacuation begins

Yogikara, Ta. Friday, November 6, 2020

As Mount Merapi volcano erupts today, Indonesian authorities have begun evacuating people living on the slopes of fertile land. Hot gas clouds can form up to five km.

About 300 people, including pregnant women, the elderly and children, were evacuated from some villages to Magelang, a safe place in Central Java, said Eddie Susanto, head of the Disaster Management Agency.

Susanto said people living in an area up to six kilometers near the mouth of the volcano were evacuated. Authorities in Central Java and Yogyakarta are monitoring the situation. The Indonesian Geological Survey issued an alert to Merapi on Thursday amid a sudden increase in censorship activity.

Earlier in June, clouds of ash and hot gas had formed up to six km from Merapi. About two and a half million people live within ten kilometers of the volcano. However, no casualties were reported. The island of Indonesia, with a population of over 270 million, is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Earthquakes occur several times a year and volcanoes erupt. There are more than 120 active volcanoes.
