The UAE has announced amendments to Islamic personal law to ensure personal freedom. This will give more freedom to women. At the same time, the UAE has tightened some laws to curb crime. From now on, raping a teenager or a girl in the UAE will be punishable by death.
They are also allowed to live together without getting married and to drink alcohol without a license. Laws that have been amended include the Personal Status Law, the Federal Penal Code, and the Federal Penal Procedure Code. However, these reforms could have a direct impact on those who go and work there, including Indians, who currently have citizenship.
Laws have been amended on offenses involving honor such as the will and property of tourists, marriage and divorce, and physical abuse. So from now on, tourists living in the UAE will have the freedom to choose the law that will apply to their ancestral property.
Under the Penal Code number three of 1987, the President of the UAE has amended and withdrawn the provisions that reduce the punishment for crimes committed in honor. Another important amendment is that from now on, men and women will be able to live with each other even if they are not married in the UAE.
This means that the UAE allows people living in a live-in relationship to live together even without marriage. This is likely to reduce post-marital atrocities against women. Not only that, from now on, drinking alcohol will not be considered a crime in the UAE and people are allowed to consume alcohol. As a result, from now on, people living in the UAE will no longer need a license to drink alcohol at home.
However, the lifespan of an alcoholic must be more than 21 years. Also, anyone who is married and later moved to the UAE is allowed to get a divorce according to the rules and laws of the country in which they got married. Men who molest women will be severely punished. Stocking with women, harassing women on the streets, etc. will be considered a crime.
