DDC polls begin in Jammu and Kashmir, first phase polls for 43 seats


- There are 1427 candidates and seven lakh voters

Elections for the District Development Council (DDC) in Jammu and Kashmir began today. The first round of voting began this morning amid killer cold and snow.

There were 43 seats up for grabs today. A total of 1427 candidates were in the fray for these seats. A total of seven lakh voters will cast their votes today. The DDC elections are to be held in eight phases.

The last phase is scheduled for December 19. 2146 polling stations were set up for today's polling. Strict security arrangements were made to prevent any untoward incident.

Of the seven lakh voters who are going to cast their votes today, there are three lakh 72 thousand voters in Kashmir division and three lakh 28 thousand voters in Jammu division. Security at polling stations was taken care of so that every voter came wearing a mask and social distance was maintained.

However some local political parties called for a boycott of the elections.
