Yogi government gave extension to SIT, SIT gave another ten days asking for term

Lucknow dated 7th October 2020 Wednesday

The SIT set up by the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh to probe the gangrape of a Dalit girl in Hathras on the 14th of last month was extended for another ten days.

As per the earlier schedule, the SIT was to submit its investigation report today. After a nationwide uproar over the Hathras scandal, Yogi formed a SIT team of state police which was to submit its report in seven days, i.e. today, October 7. But the SIT asked for a little more time and the Yogi government gave SIT ten more days.

However, the Opposition said that the SIT had sought more time to reduce the heat and cool down the matter.

The Yogi government, headed by Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary Bhagwan Swaroop, had constituted a three-member SIT to investigate and report on the Hathras case. Meanwhile, the Yogi government also demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI. Surprisingly, the victim's family members opposed the CBI probe. The state government had appealed to the Supreme Court to hand over the case to the CBI.
