Read the warning given to Raghuram Raj against the self-reliant Bharat Abhiyan

Well-known economist and former Reserve Bank governor Raghuram Raj has warned the government about the government's self-reliant India campaign.

He said in an online seminar that it was not appropriate to ban imports as part of the drive for a self-reliant India. The country has followed this path before and has not been successful. India has tried this option a few years back and it has not been successful. So I warn the Government of India to move in this direction.

Rajan said that in order to increase exports, importing those goods would have to make the products exported cheaper. It is not effective to make India an exporting power alone. The government of India needs to work to create a better environment for production in the country instead of imposing higher tariffs on imports.

He said the government also needs to understand the impact of the coronavirus on the lives of ordinary people. A number of companies have closed down. They can no longer afford school fees, such barriers are hindering development.

"The steps taken by the government to revive various sectors of the economy are good but the government should take everyone into confidence before taking such a decision. This will enable such decisions to be implemented more effectively," Rajan said.
