New delhi date. Saturday 3 October 2020

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, Himachal Pradesh today. The tunnel will cover a distance of 46 km between Manali and Leh. It will also save four to five hours of travel time.

Modi will attend a public function in the Solang Valley after the inauguration ceremony at Sisu in Lahaul Spiti, officials said. He said that along with the Prime Minister, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh would also be present.

The Atal Tunnel is the longest tunnel in the world, connecting the 9.02 km long tunnel to Manali with the Lahaul Spiti Valley all year round. Earlier, the valley was cut off from the rest due to heavy snowfall for about six months.

The tunnel is built between the Pir Punjab mountains of the Himalayas at a height of about 3000 meters above sea level with sophisticated features. According to officials, the Prime Minister will visit Kullu district as well as the Snow and Avalanche Research Institute.
