Government panel claims: By February, half the country's population could be infected

New delhi date. 19 October 2020, Monday

At least half of the population in India could be infected with the corona virus by next year. About 650 million people could be infected with corona. Such a claim has been made by a panel of experts constituted by the Government of India. This information was provided by a member of the panel. The panel also predicted that the transition of such a large population would help reduce its speed.

India is second only to the United States in the number of coronavirus infections in the world. About 75 lakh cases have been reported in India so far. Although the country has seen a decline in new cases of corona since September, India is currently witnessing an average of 61,390 new cases per day in the last one month.

"We estimate that about 30% of the population is currently contagious and it could go up to 50% by February," Manind Agarwal, a member of the government-constituted panel and a professor at IIT Kanpur, told PTI. The committee estimates that the current prevalence of the virus is higher than the central government's serological survey. Only 14% of the population was infected in September, according to the CIRO survey.
