Do Indian men spend only 5 minutes for a family in 8 hours?

The Statistical Organization of India (NSO) last week prepared the Time Use in India 2018 survey report. This included the type of activity in which Indians spend their time. This is the first time such a report has been prepared by the NSO. The survey was conducted by NSO from January 1 to December 31, 2016 and included 40 people from 12 families. The survey analyzed the daily routine of a family member over the age of 6 years. The survey covered working hours and routines from 9 a.m. to 8 a.m. the next day.

Surprising information found in the survey is that 3 minutes is spent in self-care. These included eating, drinking, and health care. After that most of the time was spent on employment and related activities. People in urban areas had to spend more than rural people for employment. They used to spend an average of 3 minutes i.e. 3 hours behind employment in the city. In comparison, in rural areas, 3 minutes was spent on livelihood related activities.

An interesting fact was that women in rural areas used to spend 301 minutes behind their families in which they were not getting any salary. While women in urban areas spend 3 minutes behind their families. However, behind the family, rural men spent 3 minutes and urban men spent 2 minutes. In today's digital age, more time is being spent on mobile, email and chat. According to the survey, people spend about 15 minutes a day on socializing and communication, social participation and religious activities. While also spending time behind culture, mass media and sports.
