The Congress party will get a new president in January 2021, a reliable Congress source said. The source also claimed that the party's executive committee would also be elected so that no one would complain about it.

If everything goes according to the schedule as it is now, the election of the executive committee will also be held in a month. The last executive committee election in the Congress party was held in 1997 when Sitaram Kesari was the party president. The 1200 members of the party will elect members of the executive committee.

Earlier, 23 leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, Kapil Sibal and Ghulam Nabi Azad, had written letters to Sonia Gandhi complaining about the party's demand for a permanent president and an elected executive committee. The letter also mentioned that the party has not won any major elections since 2014. On the contrary, the party was losing credibility day by day. The party urgently needed a permanent president. The letter writers included five former chief ministers, some members of the Congress executive, some current MPs and former Union ministers.

According to the source, the details of the election program will be announced by the end of November.
