New delhi date. 23 October 2020, Friday

A United Nations expert says the Koro epidemic will increase the number of people living in extreme poverty. Olivier de Shutter, a special envoy for extreme poverty and human rights, said the Corona would plunge 15 to 175 million people into abject poverty.

He apprised the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly - Social, Humanitarian and Cultural - about the plight of the world's weakest sections. He said. We should reconsider the development model.

He further said that most of the people who will fall into abject poverty will be workers working in the informal sector or in unsustainable employment conditions. Most of them will be women. Environmental sustainability and social justice must be considered a prerequisite for shaping economic reform.

Shutter was one of five independent experts who participated in the virtual dialogue with the committee representatives. Topics ranging from extreme poverty and internal displacement to education, human rights, safe drinking water and adequate housing were covered.

Experts noted the interrelationship between conflict and climate change. He recommended taking steps to ensure that students could have access to clean water and other sanitation facilities at the school during the epidemic.
