The BJP had lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alleging human rights violations in various parts of the state after the formation of the Shiv Sena-led Uddhav Thackeray government in the state of Maharashtra.

As the BJP became active against the Shiv Sena's 'atrocities', Uddhav Thackeray's government was likely to face more difficulties. BJP Rajya Sabha members, led by BJP national vice-president Vinay Sahastrabuddhe, knocked on the doors of the National Human Rights Commission and complained of increasing human rights violations in various parts of Maharashtra.

Apart from Vinay Sahastrabuddhe, MP Bhagwat Karad and Dr Vikas Mahatme told the commission that human rights violations were on the rise after December 2019. Anyone writing anything on social media against the government was being persecuted. On December 23, 2019, a young man named Hiraman Tiwari was beaten by Shiv Sena leaders on social media against Uddhav Thackeray's government and his hair was shaved off.

BJP MPs also mentioned the killing of two monks and their driver in Palghar in April this year. The beating of a former Navy officer was also brought before the tribunal and it was requested to conduct an inquiry into the incident of such attacks and see to it that the culprits are punished.
