For the first time in the world, a robot performed cancer surgery, and the patient recovered quickly

New Delhi, 20 September 2020 Sunday

A robot performed a cancer surgery with a team of doctors, the first of its kind for a patient, the report said, adding that this unique experiment has reduced patients' recovery time by a third.

Doctors at Norfolk and Norwich University in Britain's National Health Service decided that all three stages of the surgery would be completed simultaneously, so three teams of doctors and a robot began the procedure at the same time.

According to a report, the robot was named Da Vinci Si after doctors implanted it in the surgery of a 53-year-old patient battling advanced rectal cancer.

The robot had surgical instruments in all four hands, and was controlled by doctors through a joystick and a 3D screen, valued at Rs 9.5 crore.

The surgery was performed in July but information related to it has now come out, with a total of 14 doctors participating in the surgery, with experts believing that the experiment will pave the way for multiple surgeons to operate simultaneously in the coming days.

Prior to this, complex surgery for advanced rectal cancer was performed in different shifts, with one team working on another patient's surgery, which took about 12 hours.

But this time after 10 hours of surgery, the recovery time of the patients has also been reduced. Earlier, the patients had to stay in the hospital for 21 days, but this time they recovered in just 7 days.
