World Elephant Day: Learn some interesting facts about elephants

August 12 is celebrated around the world as Elephant Day. This day is celebrated to spread awareness about the plight of Asian and African elephants and to draw attention to it. The day was first launched on August 12, 2012.

The number of elephants in the country was counted in the year 2017. According to the 2017 elephant census, there are 30,000 elephants in India, but their numbers are slowly declining.

Kerala has the highest number of elephant deaths

Kerala is the most notorious state in India in terms of elephant deaths, with one elephant dying every third day.

Killing animals is considered a crime

It is a crime to harm or kill any animal, but very few people are punished for this crime. Under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, killing animals is punishable by up to three years and a fine of up to Rs 25,000. Re-harm to animals can carry a sentence of up to seven years.

Some other interesting information

The baby elephant stands up only 20 minutes after birth. An elephant can eat 150 kg of food in a day. In terms of weight, an elephant can weigh up to 5,000 kg. As many as 500 people could lose their lives in a conflict with an elephant.

There are currently 27,000 elephants left in the country. More than 02 thousand elephants have been taken hostage. A decade ago, the number of elephants in the country was one million. 100 elephants are killed every year.
