There was a special reason behind writing the letter to Soniaji

-Ghulam Nabi Azad revealed in the interview

-No one would have got special rights except Gandhi family

Ghulam Nabi Azad, a senior Congress leader, said there was a special reason behind the letter to Sonia Gandhi. Had anyone other than the Gandhi family become the interim party president, he would not have had the privilege of taking all decisions.

We did not want Soniaji to resign. That is why we expressed our desire by letter that the party should meet a permanent president. The letter was slammed at an August 24 executive meeting. The question was raised as to why so many senior leaders dared to write such a letter.

The 23 leaders who wrote the letter included Ghulam Nabi Azad, a senior leader originally from Jammu and Kashmir. In an interview, he explained why he had to write the letter. Azad said that Rahul Gandhi had resigned as party president last year. Everyone knew that Soniaji was not in good health. In those circumstances, we tried hard to persuade Rahul Gandhi, but he did not accept, so Soniaji became the interim president and when his term came to an end, it occurred to us that if Soniaji resigned, someone other than the Gandhi family would have to be the president. In a bid to prevent this from happening, we wrote a letter to Soniaji requesting that a permanent president be appointed. The letter also praised the contribution of the Nehru family and the Gandhi family. Suppose a person other than the Gandhi family becomes the president, the functioning of the party would be adversely affected as he would not have been given the privilege of making all decisions independently.
