The Gandhi family is busy in damage control, Sonia Gandhi called Ghulam Nabi Azad

- Initiated efforts to persuade dissidents

The Gandhi family began efforts to persuade dissidents in the party after a scuffle at a Congress executive meeting on Monday. Sonia Gandhi herself phoned Kashmiri leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Ghulam Nabi Azad was one of the people who wrote the letter to Sonia Gandhi. When Rahul Gandhi accused the journalists of having links with the BJP, Ghulam Nabi Azad said in no uncertain terms that if there was any connection with the BJP, he would resign from the Congress party and as a Member of Parliament. Apparently, Azad was very upset with Rahul Gandhi's allegation.

Azad is the incumbent leader of Jammu and Kashmir and his grievances are unaffordable to the Congress party. So Sonia Gandhi herself called him on Tuesday to address his grievances. The executive meeting on Monday was abuzz when it was revealed that 23 members had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi on the issue of her permanent chairmanship in the Congress party. Ghulam Nabi Azad was also named among the letter writers.

When Rahul Gandhi declared that the correspondents had links with the BJP and Azad was ready to resign if the allegation was proved, Rahul and Sonia understood that the bandage should be bandaged before the game slipped out of their hands.

So Sonia took the initiative herself and tried to quell Azad's resentment by calling Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday. Only time will tell how successful their efforts have been.

Like Azad, there are many other dissidents who have to be persuaded. On Tuesday, Digvijay Singh, a senior leader from Saje Madhya Pradesh, said the discontent did not happen in a day. He had been in the party for a long time.
