- The issue was discussed in a digital meeting with Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi 28th August 2020 Friday

At least seven states have decided to take the matter to the Supreme Court on the issue of JEE-NEET exams. Seven states have opposition governments.

Earlier, students from 11 different states had petitioned the Supreme Court to adjourn the exam in view of Corona. However, the apex court rejected the plea saying that the future of millions of students was in question. The future of millions of students cannot be compromised because of the opposition of a few students.

When Congress president Sonia Gandhi held a video conference with state chief ministers on Wednesday, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee said the states should be prepared to go to the Supreme Court themselves on the issue. However, Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Hemant Soren opined that instead of going to court, the chief ministers should discuss with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand postponement of the exams.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray also raised the issue of Corona and insisted on postponing the JEE-NEET exam. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Badhel and Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayan Sami also expressed their views.

It will be interesting to see how the Supreme Court, which had earlier rejected the students' application, responds to such an application by the Chief Ministers. The central government had made it clear that the exam would be held under any circumstances. BJP MP Dr Subramanian Swamy had publicly demanded the cancellation of the exam. Swamy also warned that if the central government did not cancel the exam, the BJP would suffer the same loss as the Congress during the sterilization in 1976.
