The police station in the area was lit up and a festive atmosphere was created when two of the youths who gangraped a minor a year ago in Maharashtra's Buldhana district were sentenced to death on Thursday.

The Chikhli police station was lit up and firecrackers were set off when a special district court in Buldhana sentenced two accused to death on Thursday. On April 26, 2019, a nine-year-old boy was picked up by two youths lying on the road with his parents and taken to a quiet place where he was raped.

The victim's father had lodged a complaint with the police that his daughter was missing and Vishwanath Borkar and Nikhil Golait were later nabbed. Both confessed to gangrape. The incident sparked outrage in the entire Buldhana district. People marched with the demand to take the rapists fast. One day the whole city observed a voluntary shutdown.

The court had sentenced both the accused to death in the final hearing of the case on Thursday. The woman, a social worker treating the victim, said the baby had barely recovered when she had to undergo two surgeries. Today, the baby and the social worker who revived it pray that it will not happen to any other baby.

It was not clear whether the court had allowed the special court to appeal against the sentence passed by the special court. But the whole city of Buldhana was overjoyed and the people rejoiced.
