Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commemorated the martyrdom of Imam Hussain on the occasion of Moharram. Prime Minister Modi said that justice and truth were paramount for Imam Hussain.

PM Modi tweeted, "We are remembering the martyrdom of Imam Hussain." Nothing was more important to them than justice and truth. His emphasis on equality and fairness is significant and empowers many.

The first month of the Muslim calendar is called Moharram. This is the holiest month for Muslims. The Muslim New Year begins this month. The 10th day of the month of Moharram is called Roj-e-Ashura. Imam Hussein was martyred on this day. Moharram is considered to be the most important day. This is celebrated as a month of sorrow.

The Battle of Karbala took place in Tarikh-e-Islam about 1400 years ago today. In this war he fought the battle of truth against untruth. In this battle, Imam Hussein and 72 of his companions were martyred by the Prophet Muhammad.
