Prime Minister Modi has surpassed former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the longest-serving non-Congress leader. He is also the first leader from a party other than the Congress to become the Prime Minister.

Today, Prime Minister Modi has become the longest-serving non-Congress prime minister. He broke former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's record of 2268 days.

"Today, Modi has left behind Vajpayee's total term," the BJP said in a statement. The longest serving Prime Ministers are Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh. Modi is still adamant in his second term as prime minister, the statement said.

In 2014, the Modi-led BJP defeated all parties and won the Lok Sabha elections by a landslide. The BJP also became the first party to win by such a landslide in three decades. Before coming to New Delhi, Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat for 13 consecutive years from 2001.

Born in Vadnagar, North Gujarat, Modi sold tea at a railway station in his youth. At school he was known as a strong speaker. As a young man, he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. At the age of 18, his parents arranged the marriage. But soon after, they left home and went to the Himalayas.

He joined the RSS in 1971. He went into hiding during the 1975-77 crisis and wrote several books. The Sangh sent him to the BJP in 1985 and held several positions until Keshubhai Patel was ousted. He was criticized for not controlling the 2002 riots.

The BJP had fielded Modi as its prime ministerial candidate in 2013 after the Congress weakened and several corruption cases surfaced. In his first term, he took control of the administration. How many programs like Swachh Bharat and Make India were also started. But because of the ban on notes and GST, they were very popular.
