Construction of the temple of Lord Rama has started in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama. Hindu-Muslim artisans from the city of Jalesar in Uttar Pradesh have come together to make an octagonal bell weighing 2.1 tonnes for a multi-crore Ram temple. It has taken about four months to make the bell of the Shriram temple, a unique example of communal devotion.

Dau Dayal, who has been in the business of making brass bells for temples and schools for the last three decades, along with Iqbal Mistry and about 20-25 of his assistants have come together to make octahedron bells for the Ram temple. "Our Muslim brothers specialize in the process of designing, grinding and polishing bells," said Dau Dayal. He has helped us in the construction of this bell for the Ram temple.

Dayal, 50, who has been involved in the business of making brass bells for four generations, said that great care is needed in making such a large size brass bell. One mistake can turn the tide on months of hard work, but by the grace of God everything has gone right. We didn't just use brass to make this bell. It also uses octahedrons like gold, silver, bronze, zinc, lead, iron, mercury and tin.

"Even a five-second delay in the process of refining or shaping metals would put a lot of effort," Mistry said. The specialty of this bell is that it is one-piece. We didn't do any welding in it. The bell, which was made in four months, is worth about Rs 21 lakh and is expected to be heard in an area of 15 km.

The special bell for the Ram temple has been prepared in the workshop of Vikas Mittal, chairman of Jalesar Municipal Council in Eta district. Mittal was ordered by Nirmohi Akhada after the Supreme Court's verdict on the Ram temple last November.
