Teachers or gardeners, peons and cooks?

The Tripura state government again applied to the Supreme Court

-Let us recruit new teachers

New delhi date. Wednesday 29 July 2020

The Tripura state government had filed an application in the Supreme Court to allow us to recruit ten thousand graduate, postgraduate and undergraduate teachers. These are the same tens of thousands of teachers whose appointments were earlier revoked by the Supreme Court. Most interestingly, the Tripura State has claimed in the petition that we have to recruit guards, gardeners, peons, cooks and junior clerks. This final exercise provides interesting details.

In 2010 and 2014, the Tripura state government recruited 1,035 undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate teachers through oral interviews. The recruitment was challenged in court on the grounds that the recruitment was in favor of the adoptees and relatives. The state government claimed that the recruitment was done under the revised employment policy of 2003. The recruitment was canceled by the Tripura High Court on May 7, 2014. The High Court judgment was challenged in the Supreme Court. After all the hearings, on March 29, 2017, the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the High Court.

Now the Tripura state government has made a new move. Earlier, the teachers whose appointments were canceled sought permission from the Supreme Court to continue as an interim option. The Supreme Court has given leave to these teachers to continue working till March 31, 2020 as an interim option. The state government has been saying that we have a shortage of 12,000 teachers so recruitment is inevitable. The apex court did not accept this argument and now the state government has sought leave to recruit for the posts of counselors, library assistants, hostel wardens and school assistants in schools. The apex court also sent a contempt of court notice to the state government over the issue.

Now the state government has applied to the Supreme Court to allow undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate youth as gardeners, peons, guards and chefs. If the Supreme Court accepts the petition, Tripura will be the first state where teachers will be working in the grades of gardener, peon, security guard and chef.
