Global warming responsible for growing locusts, big crisis on India: WMO

United Nations, Ta. Tuesday, July 21, 2020

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a warning about locusts. Locusts have become a major threat to food security in East Africa and India. These countries also include Pakistan.

This warning has been issued by the United Nations WMO. He further said that locust infestation is more in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

Pakistan declared a state of emergency in February, the largest locust infestation in Pakistan in two decades. The WMO has also given various reasons for the sudden increase in the number of locusts in natural climate change.

In it, the organization said that the situation is deteriorating due to climate change, and the locusts are also growing as the temperature rises. So one of the main reasons for the growth of locusts is the high temperature. In addition to rising temperatures, locusts also increase in the desert due to rainfall, strong winds, and so on.

In short, global warming is creating an environment that has led to an increase in the number of locusts. However, the sudden change in the weather in the Indian Ocean as well as unpredictable events like hurricanes etc. are also believed to be responsible for the increase in the number of locusts. The number of locusts may still increase in the coming days.

Another warning is that locusts in India that are currently eating the standing crop or fruit in the fields may cause food shortages in India, including cereals. Citing the example of other countries, the organization said that 70,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed in Somalia. And currently the worst situation is in the three states of India.
